ABOUT

Individual guidance

Most of what changes a person does not change through information. The people who come to this work have usually read the books already. They can describe their own patterns accurately. The understanding is there, and the life has not moved.

Depth psychology names this gap precisely. Seeing a pattern is one thing. Integrating it is another, and far harder. Something has to be worked with, not only understood. That is what this work is.

Who this is for

I work with a small number of people at a time, because the work is sustained rather than quick. The people I work with are usually educated adults, often between thirty-five and sixty-five, who have already passed through mainstream psychology or mainstream spirituality and found neither one enough. They want depth, and they are not looking for a guru.

It tends to fit one of a few situations. Some are in a crisis that thinking about does not resolve, a collapse of meaning, a question of identity, a change of life the usual frameworks cannot reach. Some have practised for years, in therapy or in yoga or in meditation, and have arrived at an honest sense that something is still missing, not because the practice was wrong, but because it was only part of the whole. Some are drawn to depth psychology and the contemplative traditions and want to work with them seriously, in their own life, rather than only read about them.

It is not for people who want coaching, esoteric shortcuts, or psychology reduced to technique.

A person does not become whole by adding something good.

They become whole by facing what they had refused to look at.

DANIEL PAULUS

What it is, and what it is not

It is not clinical psychotherapy. I am not a licensed therapist, and this is not treatment for a diagnosed condition. If that is what you need, it is the right thing to seek, and I will tell you so plainly.

It is not coaching towards a goal you already hold. Often a person does not yet know what they truly need, because the unconscious is deciding it for them.

It is closer to what the tradition calls guidance. I accompany a person through a stretch of inner work, drawing on Jungian depth psychology and on the yoga, meditation, and tantra I was trained in. In practice that can mean working with dreams, with active imagination, with the shadow, alongside meditation, mantra, and attention turned to the body. I do not alternate between the two traditions. I use them together, because they describe the same ground and each gives what the other lacks. Psychology shows what is there. The practice gives a way to work with it, through the body and through attention, not through reflection alone.

How it works

The work is done online and unfolds over months rather than in single appointments. A full cycle runs over at least six months, usually as a series of around twelve meetings spaced about a fortnight apart. How long each meeting runs and what it turns on is settled as we go, because the work is individual by nature. Between meetings there is a short daily practice, fifteen to twenty minutes, that I adjust to where you are. The recordings and materials stay available to you well beyond the end.

Places are limited and currently held by a waitlist. The first step is a short introductory conversation of about thirty minutes, with no cost and no obligation on either side. We talk about what you are dealing with, what you have already tried, and what you are looking for. I describe how I would work with it. You then take your time, and decide whether to go further.

If you would like to begin, write to me and tell me, in your own words, what you are in the middle of. I read every message myself.
